The Ramayana narrates the life of Prince Rama, his wife Sita, and his loyal companion Hanuman. The story begins with the birth of Rama, the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu. Rama is the eldest son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. The king had three wives, and each wife had a son. However, Queen Kaikeyi, the youngest wife, is manipulated by her maid Manthara to demand that Rama be banished to the forest for 14 years so that her son Bharata can become king.
Rama, obedient to his father's wishes, accepts the exile along with his wife Sita and his loyal brother Lakshmana. While in the forest, Sita is abducted by the demon king Ravana, who takes her to his kingdom of Lanka. Rama and Lakshmana seek the help of an army of monkeys led by Hanuman to rescue Sita. Hanuman, with his extraordinary powers, leaps across the ocean to reach Lanka, discovers Sita, and conveys Rama's message to her.
With the help of Hanuman and the monkey army, Rama launches an attack on Lanka. The war between Rama and Ravana is fierce, and ultimately, Rama, aided by Hanuman and his allies, defeats Ravana and rescues Sita. After the victory, Rama returns to Ayodhya with Sita and is crowned as the king.
However, doubts about Sita's purity arise among the people of Ayodhya, and despite her passing a test of fire to prove her chastity, Rama reluctantly banishes her to the forest. Sita seeks refuge with the earth, and it is said that she enters the earth, where she is protected. Eventually, Rama, unable to live without Sita, also enters the earth, and both are reunited in divine form.
The Ramayana has been retold and adapted in various languages and forms throughout South and Southeast Asia. It is not only a significant religious and cultural text in Hinduism but also a story that has inspired art, literature, and performances across different cultures. The epic explores themes of duty, dharma, righteousness, and the triumph of good over evil
